The First Trip in the Fall Foliage Search

Are you looking for color yet?

Noting what trees are in a location can help you to plan for a nice fall shot, later in the year. Or just taking notes from year to year so you know where you saw great color one year and you can go back when you have a camera with you...

Howdy, fall foliage seekers!

I've noticed the first "where to go" questions coming in on the forum and I've started to think about the fall to come. I know it's early and you're saying IT'S STILL SUMMER! But the fact is, like death and taxes, the fall will follow the summer.

I've been up in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts and as of a week ago, I feel confident in saying, as of this minute, the fall is shaping up great. The summer temps have been good (but above average) and the rain has been plentiful but not too heavy.

Of course, a rainy fall will send this prediction down the tubes but it's looking good as of this second. With that said, have you started making your plans yet? Are gas prices making you think about staying home? Well these are all important things to consider. And whether you arrive and drive from destination to destination or find a base of operations that has a slew of things to see and do within walking distance then we?ll be talking about it here and in the foliage forum.

(Important) I want to you to do as I say and not as I do, because I drive all over the New England area seeing what the state of color is and my trip in July took me almost 1700 miles and this is not what I want to you to plan on doing.

I just drove through Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, back into NY and finally back through Massachusetts. I will say that MA and PA (no, I didn't plan that) had the lower prices for gas. On the other end, New York lost out with $4.27-4.35/gal but that could change in the next 100 days with oil $$ starting to lower a bit.

I want you to get a good idea of places to go, things to see and not just searching for the colors. Coming up for just the color is always a hit or miss proposition. If you ignore the other things like the seashore, mountains, and the rich history that is all over New England then you might not have as good a time as if you plan for doing a few different things during the day.

All these things we'll talk about here and I'm looking for your comments to know what to talk about. Are you looking for camera tips and ideas for locations, then we'll talk about that. Just drop a line at the bottom of the page and I'll either respond in the blog or in the forum or directly via email. But that is a last option since the volume of comments can bury me in digital letters. But leave comments and we'll get the ball rolling.
